It is used as a measurement related to the functional capacity of the heart (4) and indication of the aerobic endurance.

Volume is also be used in aerobic endurance training and speed training. In aerobic endurance training the volume can be defined as minutes, when talking about small sided games for example. In speed training the volume is calculated as number of sprints × distance and as a result indicates the total distance covered during a speed session.
